A Brief Chronology of the Life of

Charlie (Karl) Hermann

21 Jan 1889 - Karl Herman is born in Reps - A German town in the Transylvanian region of Present day Romania. Second son of Daniel and Regina Lutch Hermann.

ca 1895 - Karl's parents separate and are later divorced. The oldest son Daniel stayed with his father and young Karl went with his mother to Bucharest, where he attended the German Lutheran School.

ca 1900 - Karl's mother (now Mrs. Andrew Airdele) dies in Bucharest and he returns to Reps to live with hs father.

23 Oct 1906 - With his father, Daniel Hermann, Sr. (49+), and brother, Daniel, Jr. (19), Karl (18) board the passenger vessel, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse in Bremerhaven, Germany for passage to the United States.

30 Oct 1906 - Karl, his father and brother arrive at the Port of New York. The ship's manifest lists Karl as being 5' 5" with blond hair and grey eyes.

Oct 1911 - Charles begins working at the old Grand Opera House on North Main Street in Akron, Ohio.

22 May 1912 - Charles (with his Americanized name) marries a German immigrant, Miss Martha Anne Forst, age 22, of Cleveland.

26 Oct 1914 - Karl Woodrow Hermann is born - the first child of Charles and Martha.

11 Feb 1915 - Charles Hermann officially becomes a citizen of the United States in court in Summit County, Ohio. His application papers list his height at 5' 8".

22 Apr 1917 - Herbert Daniel Hermann is born. (He has both a cleft palate and hair lip.)

ca 1920 - Charlie begins working as an electrician at the Colonial Theater in Akron, Ohio - where he continued to work for 42 years.

ca 11 Jul 1920 - "Herbie" dies from burns suffered while playing with matches.

13 Jul 1920 - Gretchen Martha Hermann is born, Charles & Martha's first daughter.

29 May 1922 - Howard Herbert Hermann is born.

16 Jun 1925 - Olga Louise Hermann is born.

22 Jun 1926 - Daniel Robert is born.

5 Nov 1944 - Daniel Hermann, age 56, Charles's brother, is murdered (stabbed in the heart with a butcher knife) in his home/butcher shop in Chippewa Lake, Ohio.

28 Dec 1955 - Charles' beloved Martha dies in Akron, at age 67.

31 Aug 1957 - Charlie marries a neighbor - also widowed: Mrs. Susie Arbarnettia Orr MENHORN.

ca 1962 - Charlie quits his job at the Colonial Theater in Akron and (at age 73) begins working at the Cinerama Theater on Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Jan, 1984 - Charlie - now age 95 - after declaring to his family that he feels he can no longer live by himself, moves to the Wadsworth Care Center.

late summer, 1984 - Charlie moves into a permanent residence at St. Lukes Lutheran Home in North Canton, Ohio, where he is loved by all.

24 Sep 1986 - Very unexpectedly, Charles Hermann's heart gives out and he die at age 97. He is buried beside his first wife, Martha in Greenlawn Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.
